Entrepreneurship Courses for All Majors at UNCG

          The following Bryan School courses have been developed and are being introduced to the UNCG campus in support of UNCG’s desire to “.  .  . shape a culture of creative confidence and courage that weaves entrepreneurship into the fabric of the campus” – R. Wander. Each course has been developed with either minimal prerequisites in order to allow non-business students as well as business majors the opportunity to participate.

         BUS 204: Entrepreneurship Bootcamp

A fast-track, experiential program capturing the concepts of business passion, risk-taking and innovation leading to the entrepreneurial mindset. This course is not just about starting a business. It is intended to introduce students to the language of business, helping to understand how their personal interests and passions can be channeled to create opportunities to enhance their futures. This is a full, 3-credit course, conducted over 8 full days of instruction, presentations and discussions with local entrepreneurs as well participating in a computer simulation game of building a retail business. The Entrepreneurship Boot camp schedule will include three specific events each day. First, the class will participate in conversations with esteemed faculty members from the University whose experience and passion for the subject will offer great insight and learning opportunities from their specific areas of expertise. Second, the class will participate in a computer simulation game where, as teams, they will build and manage their own retail enterprise. The majority of the course grade will be determined by their success in the simulation. Third, the class will be treated to the opportunity to interact with local entrepreneurs and service providers from various fields of interest, as they share their stories on their road to entrepreneurial success.  For the experiences of a student who took the 2007 Entrepreneurship Bootcamp go to this page.
 

         BUS 205: Opportunities in Entrepreneurship

Prerequisites: None (BUS105 is recommended). Open to all majors.

This elective course is designed to introduce students to the concept of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is defined as a mind set that focuses on opportunity recognition and the use of available resources in unique ways, in order to create measurable value.

The course plan is built upon establishing a business enterprise of the student’s choice, in a team approach. Students will be introduced to the concepts of entrepreneurship, small business development, leadership, management, finance, and human resources functions, to name a few.

At the conclusion of the course, students will have gained an understanding of the foundation and operating structures of business, in general. They will be able to explain the concepts of business strategy and will have gained experience in preparing a simplified business plan model.

         MGT 240 Introduction to the Entrepreneurial Experience

         
 Prerequisites: sophomore standing or permission of instructor; GPA of 2.0 or above. Open to all majors

Introduction to the Entrepreneurial Experience encourages students to act and think like entrepreneurs.  The course readings, activities and assignments help students to understand the critical role that entrepreneurship has on the national and global economies.  The course has an interdisciplinary focus as students are encouraged to assess how social, legal and economic issues have an impact on entrepreneurial ideas. Local entrepreneurs frequently participate in course lectures and activities to enhance the student’s perspective of entrepreneurial opportunities.

The central goal of the course is to encourage idea generation and venture creation.  Students will assess their ability to undertake entrepreneurial activities and will develop concept papers around their entrepreneurial ideas.   To encourage in the development of individual entrepreneurial activities students participate in the MGT 240 Challenge (an in course idea development competition) for end of course prizes and recognition.

         BUS 306: Campus Entrepreneurs

Prerequisites: Sophomore standing (BUS 205 is recommended). Open to all majors.

This elective course is designed for students who are interested in the process of developing a small business enterprise. The course has been developed to appeal to students with varied interests and majors throughout the campus. A unique feature of this course is the opportunity afforded students who successfully complete the course requirements – at the conclusion of the course, students will be able to submit and present their business plans to a selection committee and earn a business license to conduct business on the UNCG campus. In effect, they will become “campus entrepreneurs.”

Students will exit the course with a number of skills involving these topics:

  • business ideation
  • market research
  • business strategy development
  • team dynamics and interplay
  • formal business plan development
  • presentation planning and delivery
MGT 340: Seminar in Social Entrepreneurship and Leadership

Prerequisites: Sophomore standing or permission of instructor; GPA of 2.0 or above.  Open to all Majors

Social entrepreneurship is a growing field that depends on market driven practices to create social change. Social entrepreneurs leverage available economic resources and innovation to support their passion to have a positive impact on the global and local community.

In MGT 340 students will critically examine entrepreneurship in both for-profit and not-for profit organizations.  The course takes a global perspective with particular emphasis on the ecological, economic, political and social welfare issues that have an impact on the ability of organizations to respond wisely to societal demands.  An examination of social entrepreneurship will provides the framework for understanding and practicing socially responsible behaviors.  In MGT 340 innovation, creativity, adaptation and planning are held as key components in creating ventures that respond to critical social needs. 

Highlights of course activities include:

    • Creating a blog on social entrepreneurship
    • Organizing a campus dialogue on social entrepreneurship
    • Participation in a national “Dream Paper” competition sponsored by RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service at LBJ School at University of Texas Austin
    • Complete sixteen hours of service learning for  a local social enterprise

Entrepreneurship Related Courses for Arts Majors at UNCG

Dance

DCE 455 Career Management for the Dance Artist (2:3). Overview of the professional dance world, including auditioning, grant writing, marketing, how companies/non-profits are organized, and advocacy.

DCE 621 Administration of Dance (3:3). Introduction to the business of dance including grant writing, company development and management, public relations, concert production, and touring.

Broadcasting and Cinema

BCN 196 Media Workshop: Entrepreneurship (1:2). Credit registration available for freshmen and sophomore students for attendance at a minimum number of entrepreneurship programs on campus each semester.

BCN 496 Advanced Media Workshop: Entrepreneurship (1:2) . Credit registration available for junior and senior students for attendance at a minimum number of entrepreneurship programs on campus each semester.

BCN 524 Media Financing and Distribution (3:3). The processes of raising and budgeting funds and distributing film and videos for theatrical release, direct DVD/video release, or television broadcast.

BCN 525 Media Organization and Management (3:3). Principles and practices of the organization and management of electronic media and motion pictures.

Theatre

THE 584 Theatre Management (3:3). Theatre organization and operation. Practical problems of financing, promoting, and staffing various theatre programs.
